Silicone, K-Rend, or insulated — how to choose the right system for your property type, location, and budget.
Not all renders are the same, and the right choice for your property depends on several factors: the age and construction of the building, your location and exposure to weather, your energy efficiency goals, and your budget. This guide walks through the main options and helps you understand which system is likely to be right for your home.
Silicone Rendering
Silicone render is the most popular choice for Lancashire properties, and for good reason. It is fully breathable — moisture from within the wall can escape through the render — while being completely water-repellent on the surface. This makes it ideal for older properties where moisture management is important.
The self-cleaning properties of silicone render are particularly valuable in Lancashire's climate. Rain washes the surface clean, preventing the algae and moss growth that can discolour traditional cement renders within a few years. A quality silicone render, properly applied, should look good for 20 years or more with minimal maintenance.
Silicone render is available in a wide range of colours and textures. It is suitable for most property types and is the system we recommend most often for standard full-house renders.
**Best for:** Most residential properties, older brickwork, properties prone to damp or moss growth.
K-Rend
K-Rend is a brand rather than a product category — it refers to a range of high-quality render products from a leading UK manufacturer. K-Rend products combine silicone technology with a through-coloured finish, meaning the colour runs all the way through the render rather than being applied as a coat on top.
The through-colour is significant because it means scratches and chips don't reveal a different-coloured substrate. Cosmetic damage is much less visible, and there is no need to repaint the render at any point.
As certified K-Rend Approved Applicators, we install these products to the manufacturer's exact specification, which is important because it ensures the full product warranty remains valid.
**Best for:** Homeowners who want a premium, permanent finish with no repainting. Popular in Chorley, Nelson, and Clitheroe for its clean, contemporary look.
Insulated Rendering (EWI)
Insulated rendering — External Wall Insulation — combines any of the above render finishes with a layer of insulation board fixed to the outside of the building. It is the most significant of the three options in terms of both cost and benefit.
The primary advantage is thermal performance. Insulated rendering can reduce heating bills by up to 30%, improve your EPC rating by one or two bands, and eliminate cold bridging. For older, solid-walled properties, it is often the only practical way to add meaningful wall insulation.
The exterior appearance after insulated rendering is indistinguishable from a standard render — the insulation is hidden beneath the finished surface.
**Best for:** Older properties with poorly insulated walls, homeowners prioritising energy bills, properties where EPC improvement is important.
